Volunteers are the life blood of Welsh sport, with over 3.8% of the adult population volunteering in sport, giving an average of 2.5 hours per week. This represents over 90,000 adults, equating to some £86,000,000 contribution to the economy in labour costs alone.  Volunteers in sport across the UK represent 26.2% of the overall volunteer sector; the largest recorded proportion of any group. Quite simply, without volunteers there would be no sport in its current form.  To increase participation in sport, we need to increase the number of volunteers. The Welsh Sports Association, in conjunction with the Sports Council for Wales is committed to:

  • Creating a positive culture for support of volunteers; to encourage the greater involvement of parents and carers helping to run sport for children and young people; to support the organisations it works with in whatever way possible
  • Taking action to recruit and develop volunteers in sport
  • Removing the barriers to training for volunteers. Training should be provided at accessible times, venue and cost
  • Raising the profile of active volunteering and recognition and appreciation of volunteers in sport in Wales
