Welcome to the April 2008 issue of the WSA e-newsletter. Recently our Strategic Plan has been published, outlining the key areas of work from 2008-2010. This can be viewed on our website and is also available as a hard copy by contacting the office. Earlier in the year a response to the Vetting and Barring consultation on behalf of all NGBs was sent to the Independent Safeguarding Authority. This can be accessed via the Child Protection area of our website. Also, we would like to remind all governing bodies that nominations for the Unsung Hero Award will need to be sent in by 18th April. At the beginning of the year the WSA, the Sports Council for Wales and the Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU) asked governing bodies for their views on the new vetting and barring scheme being phased in from autumn 2008. Several important changes to legislation come into force in April 2008. Perhaps most significantly, the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 comes into force on 6 April. The Act creates an offence of corporate manslaughter in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and corporate homicide in Scotland. Read Full Article

Alistair Darling, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, delivered his first Budget on 12th March 2008. Items of note for the sports sector include National Lottery, Gift Aid, Gambling Duties and Fuel Duty. Read Full Article

The biggest shake-up of the immigration system in 45 years is now underway with the introduction of a new points system to ensure only the best can work in Britain. The Home Office announced proposed charges for the points based system of managed migration on 30th January 2008. The tiered system will affect sportsmen and women entering the country to either play professionally or attend competitions and events. Read Full Article
