Welcome to the September issue of the WSA sports e-newsletter, giving you a flavour of some of the recent sporting activities and achievements in Wales.

Sky is the Limit Now For Welsh Gold Medal Cycling Ace Thomas

The sky is the limit now for Geraint Thomas as he contemplates a whole new chapter in his cycling career after winning an Olympic gold medal.  Thomas was part of the Great Britain quartet that broke the world Team Pursuit record in taking first place in Beijing's Laoshan Velodrome.  Full story

Paralympians Ready to Resume Welsh Medal Haul in Beijing

 Sprinter Kate Arnold could not have a better person to oversee her new athletics career as she competes with over 20 other Welsh men and women at the Beijing Paralympics this month.  Full story

Countdown Has Started To Wales' Turn To Host Uk School Games

 Wales take on the mantle of host nation for the 2009 UK School Games and will go into them with a number defending champions after this year's extravaganza ended with medals galore returning across the Severn Bridge.  Full story

David Davies to Call Time on His Career at 2012 Olympics

 David Davies is going to finish his career 'at the top' at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.  Davies, a silver medallist in China over the marathon 10 kilometre open water swim and bronze in the 1500m in Athens 2004, thinks his time as a competitive athlete will be up in London but that the baton will be passed onto a British squad of immense talent.  Full story

Pearson's Breakthrough May Signal Hope of Wheelchair Rugby Getting WRU Acknowledgement

Josie Pearson has flown out to China to break new ground in wheelchair rugby.  The Cardiff Pirates player will become the first woman to play in the Paralympics and, although she has an angelic and glamourous look about her, she has a tackle like Gavin Henson in full flight!  Full story

All The Dedication and Sacrifice was Worth it for Neath's Tom Haffield

 The Olympics is all about effort, dedication and sacrifice and Neath's Tom Haffield is looking to catch up on everything he missed before the Beijing Games now that they are over.  Haffield is just 20 and will be aiming towards London to make a real impression in the pool after exiting the Games after the second heat of his men's 400 metres Individual Medley in a time of 4.16.72mins. Two Future Olympians are Inspired by Welsh Heroes

So many words have been spoken over the past month about how the incredible British Olympic achievements can inspire youngsters to become champions in the future.  Iconic Welsh figures like Geraint Thomas, Nicole Cooke and Tom James, all gold medal winners in Beijing, and silver medallists David Davies, in swimming, and Tom Lucy, rowing, have often talked about how hard work and dedication can bring its' rewards. Snooker Star Wells on Cue to Rise in his Debut Pro Season

Daniel Wells has nothing against Wales but he is quite happy to spend a lot of his time strolling around dark rooms in Sheffield at the moment.  The Neath left-hander has begun and adventure which, he hopes, will lead to a huge career on the green baizes of professional snooker in future years.  Full story

Dixon Aims to Get Super League Recruitment Right for the Celtic Crusaders

 The dust has settled now on the historic decision of July 22 that will give Wales its first Super League rugby league team next year in the Celtic Crusaders.  But, while the champagne bottles have been put into the recycling bin for weeks, the stark reality has hit home that there is barely half-a-year to put the club's ambitions plans into action.  Full story

The Last Man to Win a Welsh Gold Is Happy to be consigned to History Books

 Richard Meade is more than happy to see his mantle of the last Welsh sportsman to win an Olympic gold medal be consigned to the history books.  Back in 1972, three-day eventer Meade listened to the National Anthem twice at the Munich Games where he collected his gold medals in the team and individual events, having done so with the national side in Mexico four years earlier.  Full story

Will Wrexham's Tom James be Part of Another 'Redgrave-Pinsent' Rowing Legacy?

 Only time will tell if Wrexham's Tom James and his three crewmates in the British Four can emulate the legends set by Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Matthew Pinsent on the Olympic stage.  But for now, the 24-year-old former Cardiff University student is going to put his gold medal 'in my sock draw' so that, every day, he will see it sitting there proudly.  Full story

Gemma's Keeping Up the Family Sporting Tradition

 Wales' Gemma Plumley has a real sporting heritage to call on in her family.  Her father is Gary Plumley, known around South East Wales as a respected estate agent but who was, during his sporting heyday a goalkeeper of great note who played for Newport County and Cardiff City.  Full story

Welsh Golf on a High from Woosie to the Junior Ryder Cup

 Ian Woosnam is enjoying a revival in his illustrious career among the veterans of world golf.  It is his first year on the Seniors Tour and already the former Masters champion is taking it by storm, a clear leader at the top of the Order of Merit ahead of second-placed German legend Bernhard Langer.  Full story

Cundy Aims to Make History - Just Like Romero Has Done

 For mile upon mile and day after day in front with, mostly, just the noise of his pedals and the boards as company, Swansea's Jody Cundy has been riding around the Wales National Velodrome.  But in his mind's eye is another colour - gold.  Full story

Malcolm Re-Thinks His Plans to Wind down Career after Stunning Olympics

 Christian Malcolm was beginning to plan the day he hung up his spikes before flying out to Beijing for the Olympic Games.  However, after running in the greatest 200 metres of all time, he is having a re-think about that.  Full story
