Welcome to the September 2012 issue of our e-newsletter. As the evenings draw in and night time temperatures drop, it's time to reflect on the achievements of our athletes during this year's spectacular summer of sports, and to congratulate them on their success.

The Welsh Sports Association responds to government consultations on a range of matters which could affect the sport and outdoor pursuits sector generally and our member NGBs in particular. We regularly meet with not only Sport Wales but also with Welsh Government departmental civil servants and ministers themselves... more

Disclosure and barring update

On the 10th September 2012 the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 introduced key changes to the current disclosure and barring scheme, and sports clubs and governing bodies should ensure that they are familiar with the changes introduced, and aware of the impact they are likely to have on their organizations and the way they currently operate... more

Fran Brown Wins World Championships

British climber Fran Brown has won the female physical disability class at the 2012 World Para Climbing Championships in Paris. Twenty seven year old Fran grew up in Cornwall where she developed a passion for rock climbing. She later moved to Cardiff for University, before starting work as a theatre lighting technician in London's west end. Five years ago she was involved in an industrial accident... more

Dogs put the bite on opponents to claim Welsh title

Windsurfers the Reservoir Dogs retained their Welsh title by the narrowest of margins in a thrilling finale and will go on to represent Wales in the Team 15 (T15) Champions Cup Final in October. They claimed the final event, at Llandegfedd Reservoir, making best use of home advantage to put them into a tie-break with Mumbles Mutineers... more

North Wales get international tournament

North Wales' development as a rugby union base has been further enhanced with the announcement that major internationals are coming their way in November. It is part of a drive to bring the thousands of players and spectators from across the north of the Principality nearer to the national game... more

Wales' greatest teams get a special welcome home

Wales' Olympic and Paralympic heroes were given an incredible Welcome Home from sports fans from across the Principality at The Senedd this month. In total, Wales won seven Olympic and 14 Paralympic medals in London and many of the athletes were in Cardiff Bay to receive the praise of Wales Government Presiding Officer Rosemary Butler, First Minister Carwyn Jones and the head of Sport Wales Professor Laura McAllister. Outside on the steps of The Senedd was a male voice choir, a brass band and some of the army of Games Maker volunteers who were in London and have been highly praised for their efforts during the festivals of sport... more

Cardiff-born Tom James put his name alongside the rowing legends of Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Matthew Pinsent by winning a second Olympic Games gold medal in London. WRL president Nicholas receives two major honours for his work

Wales Rugby League president Mike Nicholas has been honoured for his five decades of service to the sport in the Principality with two major awards this year. Leading distance runner Alex Hains hopes to be returning to the road in earnest soon after suffering a prolapsed disc in his back - with specific targets in mind for the future. Wales' top male player has backed the worldwide drive to make squash an Olympic Games sport in eight years time. Leading players and officials around the world are putting pressure on the International Olympic Committee to give them a chance in the 2020 Games... more

Tight finish as Monkstone trio take title

Tony Smith, Brian Dreyer and Derek Jones were crowned Welsh Triples champions after winning their title at the 34th Wenvoe Welsh Open in a busy August for Petanque players throughout the Principality.... more

WRL launch women's team in time for next year's world cup

Commonwealth Games medallist Carys Parry (Photo courtesy Gary Mitchell) put away her spikes and slipped on a pair of boots last weekend as Wales Rugby League launched a new women's team aiming for glory at next year's World Cup. Gregory gets a golden glow in Essex

Welsh youngsters learn lessons from the table tennis masters

No other country in the world plays more or is renown more for table tennis than China. So when four Welsh youngster had the chance to fly over there for two weeks, just hitting against any reasonable person must have been like a master-class. Now those four teenagers are going to bring their experiences back to Wales and, hopefully, build on them towards bigger things in the future... more
