WSA Press Releases

Kimmo Muttonen on 17/04/2005

The new Commercial Unit of the Welsh Sports Association, the umbrella body for all of the national governing bodies of sport and physical recreation in Wales, is mark, set and go with its race to team up Welsh sport and the international business community.

The organisation is currently working with 14 key sports; athletics, badminton, canoeing, cricket, cycling, disability sports, golf, gymnastics, hockey, netball, sailing, squash, swimming, tennis; from its office at the Welsh Institute of Sport in Cardiff to develop a range of sponsorship and commercial packages that provide companies with effective sales prospects and PR benefits.

It has identified a large number of opportunities for businesses to target the entire Welsh population through involvement with national teams, high profile events, performance development and grassroots programmes. Heading the unit is Kieran Harris, who joined the Welsh Sports Association (WSA) as Commercial Director in January of this year.

Mr Harris said: "Sponsorship must form a credible part of the marketing mix and ultimately help increase sales and this is no different for companies who invest in sport at whatever level. Businesses should be very clear about what they want sponsorship to achieve and sporting organisations should ensure they can deliver their end of the deal.

"The WSA's role is to help professionalise its governing body partners and assist companies easily identify what they can get out of being involved in Welsh sport, whether it be brand awareness and public relations opportunities, access to membership databases, opportunities to provide goods and services to sporting organisations and participants, or fulfilling CSR through support of grassroots and community programmes."

The Welsh Sports Association is calling on companies to contact its commercial unit for discussions on using sport in Wales to increase its market share.
