Paul Dancey on 02/09/2010

Health officials in India have warned that close to 1,000 cases of Dengue fever have been reported in the Indian capital. Dengue fever is spread by mosquitoes that are known to bite during the day, so athletes attending the games could be vulnerable.

The health committee chairman of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Dr VK Monga, said "mosquito breeding is likely to be at its peak during the Games and dengue is a concern.

"Dengue is reported during this time of the year, but it looks to be more severe this season.

"Great care needs to be taken to ensure it does not become a problem during the Games."
