WSA Backs Sport-4-Sport Campaign

The Welsh Sports Association (WSA), the umbrella body for the National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs) in Wales, has given its backing to the Sport-4-Sport campaign being organised by Tsunami Relief Cymru, in an attempt to raise funds to start the rebuilding programme of the sports infrastructure in the affected region.

Following last year’s Boxing Day devastation, much has been achieved in dealing with the humanitarian disaster – to reinstate essential services and to rebuild homes, schools and hospitals, but the non essential elements, including sports facilities and opportunities, have somewhat understandably, been pushed down the priority list.

The Sport-4-Sport campaign seeks to give those involved in sport in Wales, whether as participants or spectators, an opportunity to make a difference to those denied their own involvement as a result of the Tsunami. Funds raised, over the Sport-4-Sport weekend of 10th/11th September 2005, through bucket collections, raffles, social events, sponsored walks and a range of sports related activities, will be directly targeted at a range of sports projects.

Proceeds from the campaign will be used to restore fairly low level opportunities for the affected region, ranging from the purchase of basic equipment such as bats and balls, to the provision of artificial cricket wickets and sports pitches.

A £3,000 donation from Glamorgan County Cricket Club has given the appeal real impetus and the Welsh Sports Association is urging its 70+ NGBs and their 6000 member sports clubs to get behind the appeal, and demonstrate the caring, supportive nature of the Welsh Sporting Community.

In Backing the Sport-4-Sport appeal, WSA Chairman Bob Turner said:
"The Sport-4-Sport weekend is a real opportunity for us fortunate to enjoy regular, accessible and affordable sporting programmes, to make a difference to those cruelly denied those opportunities. All contributions, no matter how small, have the potential to positively impact on this project, and I am confident we in Wales will show the way.”
