Speedway comes to Cardiff

Paul Dancey on 03/07/2009

Cardiff's Millennium Stadium launched it's second decade with the British Speedway Grand Prix, with Jason Crump of Australia racing to victory ahead of Denmark's Hans Andersen, Sweden's Fredrik Lindgren and USA's Greg Hancock.

British rider Chris Harris won the Cardiff Grand Prix in 2007, but sadly only made it to the semi-finals this year.

With tickets costing up to £90, a crowd of 42,000 were treated to tribute band Killer Queen, a spot of bike acrobatics, and the top 16 riders in the world scrapping it out around four circuits of the temporary stadium track.

Marketed as "No brakes, no gears, no fears", speedway is a spectacular sport of speed, confrontation and courage, and first-timers seem to love its slick, all-action presentation. But for all that, the sport struggled to get the media coverage it deserved for such a well supported event.
