The organizers of the Coral Welsh National, due to be held at Chepstow Racecourse on the 27th December, have chosen Disability Sport Wales as their official charity partner. So funds raised by one of the biggest horse-racing events in Wales will now go towards the development of talented disabled athletes across Wales.
With the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games fast approaching, it’s a very important time for Disability Sport Wales and the 54 athletes supported by the organization, with many of those athletes hoping to be selected for the 2012 Paralympics GB squad.
Wales has a strong track record in producing many top paralympians, particularly in Paralympic dressage events including three time Paralympic gold medallist Nicola Tustain and upcoming young riders Georgia Wilson and Natalie Povey, who are both on the British squad.
Richard Holland, Executive Director at Chepstow Racecourse said: "The Coral Welsh National is an important and high profile event, broadcast live on the BBC and dominating column inches across industry media over the Christmas period.
"There is a perfect fit between Chepstow Racecourse and Disability Sport Wales as both organisations aim to produce champions of the future. The team here will be working tirelessly to raise as much money as possible to help develop opportunities for disabled people and continue Wales’ excellent track record in producing Paralympian."
Jon Morgan, Executive Director of Disability Sport Wales said: "The Coral Welsh National provides the perfect platform for Disability Sport Wales to launch itself as a charity and to bring the Welsh curtain up on 2012. The team at Chepstow Racecourse have been so supportive of our aims and I have no doubt that this year’s Coral Welsh National will help to raise the profile of our work across Wales and the UK. In terms of performance, our ambition is to help create a nation of champions and many of those athletes who will benefit from funds raised at the event will be present on the day."
Professor Laura McAllister, Chair of Sport Wales, said: "It’s important that the sports sector challenges itself to be more innovative and this is a great example of how organisations can work with the private sector. By collaborating with Chepstow Racecourse, Disability Sport Wales are able to reach a new audience and highlight their good work in the run up to London 2012."
