WSA Overseas Expedition Lectures
Paul Dancey on 30/11/2011
On the 2nd December Cardiff International White Water Centre is hosting an evening of tall tales from across the globe.
Each year the Welsh Sports Association supports numerous overseas expeditions where Welsh sportsmen and women attempt the boldest of firsts.
This year saw a team of white water kayakers attempt a new river deep in the heart of the Papuan rainforest, and cavers journey deep into a glacier in Switzerland.
Starting at 8pm, these adventurers will be reliving their experiences and sharing their stories with stunning photos and exciting video clips. An evening that will make you proud of Welsh sporting achievement and inspired to apply for funding for your own expedition.
Derewo Descent Chris Eastabrook & Peter Wood After handing over 31 million Rupiah at Nabire Airport, Papua Indonesia, Tim, Pete and Chris boarded their chartered single prop plane with three magic ingredients; kayaks, supplies and a support team. 10 days later, they flew out from the Jungle tired, hurt, disappointed and critically without any of their magic ingredients.
What happened in those 10 days is a story of hardship, impossible decisions and massive white water.
Beneath The Ice: A Journey To The Heart Of The Gorner Glacier Gareth Davies This lecture is the story of a British attempt to explore a series of Moulin's which penetrate into the heart of the Gorner Glacier, Switzerland. In order to avoid deadly daily floods caused by melt water all exploration had to be conducted in the early hours of the morning, with a strict eye on the clock.
Over the course of the expedition, a steep learning curve led the team to progressively more technical objectives and learn respect for this unique environment. Come and hear about life on and inside the glacier, including a too close for comfort call in a mega-moulin.
