Construction work is due to start later this year on the Pwllheli National Sailing Academy and Events Centre. When completed the new centre will enable Pwllheli to attract larger and more frequent sailing events, and help the surrounding area to become a sailing destination for world-class sailors.

The project has been developed in partnership with Pwllheli Sailing Club, Welsh Government, North Wales Watersports, Plas Menai, Coleg Llandrillo and the Welsh Yachting Association, and is being jointly funded by the European Regional Development Fund, Gwynedd Council, and the Welsh Government.

Dyfed Edwards, Gwynedd Council leader, said: "This flagship development will enable Pwllheli to attract bigger and more frequent races and competitions to the area.

"Along with the economic boost, the development will also provide local people, and children especially, the opportunity to take part in water sports."

When it opens in 2013, it is hoped that the new centre on Glan Don Peninsula will help attract thousands of extra visitors to the area every year, and offer improved opportunities for people to become involved and develop skills in outdoor activities, and an asset for the community as a whole.
