The aim is high for this year’s Topper Championships

Organizers are hoping to double the entries to this year's Welsh Topper Championships when they take place on Llandegfedd Reservoir this summer.

The championships have grown to a level where 50 boats have taken part in previous events but, this year, it is expected that around one hundred boats will be at the start.

The Topper class boat is one which is generally used by people learning to sail for the first time, but has found a niche for itself in racing now.

This year's championships take place between May 12-13 at the reservoir which is situated a kilometre from New Inn near Pontypool.

Llandegfedd Reservoir, which covers a 500 acre site, is renown for both sailing and fishing. So to have the Welsh Topper Championships there is a big coup.

Llandegfedd club commodore Jeremy Symons said: "Llandegfedd offers exceptional dinghy sailing opportunities to Welsh sailors and expect the event to continue to grow year-on-year.”

The 'Topper' that all competitors will sail is an 11 foot dinghy and is sailed mostly around Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Competitive Topper class competitions have consistently had the highest turnouts at the Royal Yacht Association Zone Championships around the UK.
