New UK government 'Red Tape' consultation

Paul Dancey on 11/04/2012

The UK government has established a new website to allow stakeholders in Sports & Recreation to "name and shame" regulations that they believe are holding back growth in their sector.

Regulations identified as "unnecessary" by respondents will then have to be justified by the ministers responsible for them. If no justification is made, those rules may be scrapped.

John Penrose, the UK Tourism minister, said: "Cutting through red tape is an absolute priority for this government and central to our plans to encourage growth."

Whilst most of the 'sports' regulations highlighted on the website relate to the regulation of sports grounds and stadia, the government have indicated that they would also be interested in genuine examples of disproportionate red tape that affect the wider sports community, as they "want to help sports clubs across the country to flourish", and where possible remove barriers to participation.

The website can be found at www.redtapechallenge.cabinetoffice.gov.uk.
