South Wales players among winners at Abergavenny championship

Almost 100 players from across the UK headed to Abergavenny Tennis Club for its third annual Grade 4 Open Championships.

Finalists included players from throughout South Wales, including Newport, Swansea, Penarth, Cwmbran, Ross on Wye, Abergavenny, and Monmouth.


Events ranged from Mini Red competition for players aged eight and under to 18-and-under singles, and attracted 96 players.

"The tournament was a big hit with players and parents, and is gaining a loyal band of regular entrants travelling long distances to return each year," said the club’s head coach Robert Wedlake. The event was sponsored by tennisplanet.co.uk.

Tennis Wales chief executive Peter Drew, commented: "This is a great example of a Welsh tennis event which has become a firm fixture in the diaries of players from throughout Wales and well beyond."

8&U Red: winner - Theo Purkis (Ross on Wye), runner-up - Jack Gallacher (Abergavenny)
9&U Orange: winner - Alex Lewis (Penarth), runner-up - Oliver Dean (Cwmbran)
10&U Green: winner - Rhys Lewis (Penarth), runner-up - Harley Stevens (Swansea)
12&U Boys: winner - Odran Hobbs (Newport), runner-up - Edward Shattock (Taunton)
12&U Girls: winner - Zara Mughal (Manchester), runner-up - Erin Richardson (Bournemouth)
14&U Boys: winner - Joseph Blakeley (Trowbridge), runner-up - Jack Smith (Redditch)
16&U Boys: winner - Emyr Simmonds (Dyfed), runner-up - Christopher Widdicks (Monmouth)
