Wrexham Academy used home court advantage to win a number of Player Plus events at Wrexham Tennis Centre. The Player Plus competition is run twice a year, offering players and coaches the unique opportunity to play competitive matches with a coach on court to provide support between ends. The academy-based players won three out of five events - the U8 mixed singles, U9 mixed singles and the U12 boys singles.
Owen Critchell, from Wrexham, won the U8 event winning all this matches en route to the title with help and support from his coach Eifion Jones. Bangor's Cai Llwyd Jones, pictured above with coaches Eifion Jones and Cameron Upton, won the U9 mixed event without losing a single game, winning all his matches 4/0 beating Lewis Bradshaw. The U10 green event was won by Harrison Birch of Wrexham, who beat Dan Urey 4/0 4/1 in the final on a very wet day.
In the U12 yellow ball Llewelyn Bevan from Wrexham won the U12 boys event and Ellesmere Port's Rhona Cook took home the girls' title.
The event was moved indoors on the Sunday due to heavy rain but due to the enthusiasm and planning by the tournament referee David Rees the event was completed in time.
"The Wrexham Academy is doing a great job in bringing on some really talented young players from across North Wales," said Tennis Wales chief executive Peter Drew. "It's great to see the hard work paying dividends in impressive results like this."
