Gwent club make their point by taking top four places

Gwent Sword Club cemented their place as the Principality's leading foil club by taking all four top places in the Welsh Team Championships.
The men's A team of Rhys Melia, Ceri Richards and Richard Thomas were undefeated throughout the competition but were pushed hard by Gwent B (James Wood-Fisher, Adam Hall, Mike Kocan), who took second place, and Cardiff-based Russell Swords B, in third.
The Gwent C team (Jordan Thomas, Hugh Kocan, Mike Edwards, Chris Baker), combining a mixture of youth and experience, finished a creditable fourth.
Meanwhile, the women's A team of Abi Difford, Catherine Fisher and Lyn Robinson (pictured top right with members of the B team) were clinical as they strolled to a fourth consecutive Welsh title, proving far too strong for runners-up Gwent B (Carlie Stevens, Kelly Baker, Irene Warden) in a final which ended 45-19 to the A team.
The women finished their competition so quickly that they fitted in an unofficial individual event while the men continued to battle it out.
That unofficial competition panned out exactly as seedings, based on the team event predicted, with Difford first, Fisher second, Robinson third, Stevens fourth, Baker fifth and Warden sixth.
Meanwhile, Cardiff Fencing Club have reaffirmed their place as Wales' top epee club by retaining both men's and women's team epee titles at the Welsh Team Epee Championship
The women had a fairly straightforward path to gold, needing only to overcome Gwent Sword Club to claim the championship.
In the men's event, Cardiff A demonstrated their superiority by once again taking the title but the club didn't have things all their own way as their B team finished third behind a Welsh Veterans outfit, while Gwent A and B teams both finished ahead of the Cardiff C team, who propped up the final table in sixth.
