Paul Dancey on 26/06/2012

On Thursday 7th of June 2012 Badminton Wales was the first Welsh Governing Body to deliver the newly developed ‘Leadership Award in Badminton’, in partnership with Sports Leaders UK, at the Dome community centre in Pentwyn. Six leaders participated in the course tutored by Kerry Ann Sheppard.

The ‘Leadership Award in Badminton’ is aimed predominantly at young people from the age of 13 upwards, but is also available to parents, teachers, leisure and youth centre staff, and volunteers.

The award is made up of three modules; Modules 1 and 2 focus on communication and organisation, while Module 3 allows learners to put their generic leadership skills into a badminton specific context. Learners with no previous leadership qualification will complete all three modules, while those with a Sports Leaders UK Level 1 or 2 qualification will only need do the three hour Module 3.

In Module 3 learners will look at warm-up and cool down activities, see how badminton is broken down into its major skills, and will be given the opportunity to lead others through the process of simple skill acquisition. They will learn how to officiate at a basic level, and by the end of the module will have to lead others in a badminton activity or game.

The award is presented as a 6 hour course which includes the completion of a practical assessment and candidate Record of Achievement.

Successful candidates will be presented with a ‘Leadership Award in Badminton’ certificate, endorsed through Badminton Wales and Sports Leaders UK.
