WPA Pétanque Singles Championships 2012

The National Singles Championship was held this year at Penarth Pétanque Club, located at The Kymin. 16 players competed.
The initial part of the competition was a Round Robin, where players were put into pools of 4, the top two players from each pool qualified for the chance to win the Championship. The bottom two players from each pool were entered into the Plate competition.
The quarter final of the Main saw Phil Bradshaw beaten by Stuart Spencer (both members of Monkstone Inn PC, located in Rumney); Tony Smith, from the Monkstone PC, Roath (pictured right), won against Geoff Jones from Penarth PC. Two players from Caerleon RFC PC fought each other to go through to the semi's – Tansy Mayfield losing to Peter Beresford. The final pairing saw Paul Mayfield, again from Caerleon RFC PC, beat Bill Davies from Wenvoe PC.
The Semi saw some excellent shooting and pointing with Tony Smith competing against Peter Beresford, and Stuart Spencer against Paul Mayfield. The final saw Tony Smith (pictured) take the title as Singles Champion when he beat his opponent, Stuart Spencer in an extremely closely fought game 13/12.
The initial round of the Plate competition saw Bernard Bradshaw (Monkstone Inn PC) play against Joannie Roberts from Wenvoe PC, Laurent Mirbelle fought Valerie Falconer, and Jean-Yves Robic played against Linda Williams (all from Penarth PC). Finally, Rose Fiera from the Monkstone Inn PC progressed directly to the semi finals as her opponent Jesse Lipetz-Robic withdrew from the competition.
In the semi-finals of the plate Joannie Roberts beat Rose Fiera and Laurent Mirbelle won over Linda Williams. Joannie Roberts comfortably beat Laurent Mirbelle in the final 13/4 to take the win the Plate.
