New adiZone outdoor sports facility opens in Aberystwyth

A adiZone outdoor sports facility has been officially opened in Aberystwyth by Regeneration Minister Huw Lewis AM following a financial contribution of £250,000 by the Welsh Government’s Regeneration Fund.

The facility at Min y Ddol in Penparcau is the latest of its kind to open across the UK, with adiZones being rolled out on a nationwide basis as part of efforts to secure a lasting sports legacy from the 2012 Games with the aim of encouraging more people, young and old, to undertake physical exercise on a regular basis.

At the opening Huw Lewis emphasised the importance of these areas, "This is an important year of sport for us in the UK as we welcome the Olympic Games. We want to build on this interest and encouraging children especially to take more exercise, often through play, should not be underestimated, and can make a positive contribution to their healthy development in later years.

"I am very pleased that the Local Regeneration Board has had the foresight to support this project and I am confident the investment will reap significant benefits in years to come."

Bryn Jones, regional Communities First co-ordinator welcomed the development, "Since Aberystwyth was identified as a Regeneration Area by the Welsh Government it has been heartening to see the various initiatives that have been developed. The Adizone project is a crucial part of the jigsaw as it gives our residents an opportunity to engage in activities that will promote their physical health as well as general well-being through social interaction with others. It has certainly created a buzz and I am confident it will be well used."

Bronwen Morgan, Chief Executive of Ceredigion County Council, echoed these feelings, "The Local Authority is taking an active role in ensuring that the regeneration of Aberystwyth positively improves the lives of the residents of the town and further afield. The Adizone project offers opportunities, for all within our communities, to take part in exercise and we are very glad that Ceredigion can benefit from the legacy of the Olympic Games."
