The Welsh Petanque Association's Ladies Qualifier took place recently at Pentwyn Leisure Centre, Cardiff with four Ladies Triples Teams representing the following clubs: Caerleon RFC PC, Penarth PC, Wenvoe PC, The Wheatsheaf PC and The Monkstone Inn PC, competing to represent Wales at the Ladies European Championships to be held between 1st and 4th November 2012 in city of Ghent.

Each team played each other twice during the course of the competition; by the end of the first round robin the leading team was Joan Roberts, Gay Evens (Wenvoe PC) and Jill Brace (Wheatsheaf), followed by Gemma Foster (Wheatsheaf PC), Julie Bailey (Monkstone Inn PC) and Tansy Mayfield (Caerleon PC), pictured right, with two wins each team, followed by Pat Daviss and Barbara Vaughan (Caerleon PC) and Karen McLeod (Wenvoe PC), and Penarth PC comprising Celia Scott, Lynda Williams and Valerie Falconer with one win each.

Joan Roberts, Gay Evans, Jill Brace’s team and Julie Bailey Gemma Foster and Tansy Mayfield’s team both won their first two games of the second leg of the competition, which left Joan Roberts, Gay Evans and Jill Brace having to win their final game of the day to win the competition. However, Julie Bailey, Gemma Foster and Tansy Mayfield beat Joan Roberts’ team 13/5 in this final match, leaving both teams on the same number of wins (5 wins) and the competition was therefore decided on points’ difference.

On the final count back Julie Bailey’s team with +31 points won by 7 points over Joan Roberts’ team with +24 points, and therefore qualified for the European Championships. Congratulations and well done to all teams that took part.
