Wales celebrates tennis success

Paul Dancey on 31/07/2012

The thousands of people involved in tennis around Wales are being asked to identify those who have excelled in the past year, as nominations are sought for the annual Tennis Wales Awards.

Awards are on offer in the following categories:

  • Volunteer of the year
  • Tennis club/centre of the year
  • Performance coach of the year
  • Development coach of the year
  • Team of the year
  • Player of the year
  • Local authority contribution
  • Outstanding contribution to tennis in Wales
After previous events at the Liberty Stadium, Swansea, Venue Cymru, Llandudno and Cardiff City Stadium, the 2012 awards ceremony returns to its original venue, Celtic Manor Resort, Newport, on Saturday October 6.

"The awards offer a great opportunity to recognise and reward those who have contributed most to Welsh tennis – not just players, but officials, volunteers, coaches and clubs and centres, as well as local authorities," said Tennis Wales chief executive Peter Drew.

"It’s a chance for the thousands of people involved in tennis in Wales to celebrate the talent and dedication which exists in our sport."

"Over the past 12 months we have continued to increase our membership to over 14,000 players across Wales. We also have hundreds of coaches and volunteers who make tennis accessible at the heart of our communities. Tennis in Wales can also boast having some of the biggest primary, secondary and team competitions in the UK with over 7,000 participants," he added.

"Our best performers have included Evan Hoyt from Llanelli, who won the Junior Davis Cup with the GB team".

Nomination forms are available from the Tennis Wales offices in Cardiff and Wrexham, or can be downloaded from the Tennis Wales website.

Closing date for nominations: Wednesday 29th August 2012.
