Sport in Scotland receives £½m boost from unused bank accounts

Paul Dancey on 13/08/2012

Around £469,000 taken from bank accounts that have remained dormant for 15 years or more will be used to support twelve youth sport and recreation projects in Scotland.

Among those due to benefit are the Scottish Amateur Swimming Association who will receive £50,000 to support the training of young people from disadvantaged communities in West Dunbartonshire, North Ayrshire, Inverclyde and Dundee as swimming teachers and lifeguards.

Around 100 youngsters, mainly from black and other ethnic minorities, in and around Wester Hailes in Edinburgh should benefit from £41,816 given to a "floating" youth club to provide activities that include canoeing, kayaking, raft-building and mountain biking.

A further £22,376 will be awarded to the Crossroads Youth And Community Association to support the provision of a range of out-of-school activities in the Gorbals area of Glasgow.
