Survey finds children are being driven 500 yards to school

Paul Dancey on 28/09/2012

A recent survey has found that one in three parents living within a mile of their children's school drive them to the school gates, and even if they live within 500 yards of their children's school one in ten parents still drive their children to school.

The survey of 2,000 parents found that around 68% of parents would much rather their children walked to school, but gave them a lift instead because of time pressures.

Tamsin Kelly, editor of parentdish.co.uk, said: "Jumping in the car for the school run may be the easy option, especially when we're all so time pressed, but leaving a little more time to walk to school really does reap rewards for everyone.

"It's a time to give your children some undivided attention without the demands of home and work, and a brisk walk really does set them up for the start of the day."
