Lord Coe set to become next BOA Chairman

Following GB Hockey president Richard Leman's decision to withdraw from next month's elections for a new Chairman of the British Olympics Association, Lord Coe looks set to be elected to that position unopposed.

It has been reported that Leman, who is a member of the BOA board and is himself a past Olympic Gold medallist, had been advised by senior figures that he stood little chance of winning the election and should therefore withdraw gracefully rather than face inevitable defeat.

A statement issued by Richard Leman said: "Recognising the unique circumstance in which we find ourselves in having the person who led the organisation and delivery of what is widely regarded as the most successful Olympic and Paralympic Games in history standing for election as our next chair, I have decided to put my full support behind Seb Coe and his candidacy."

Leman’s decision to withdraw was backed by current BOA chairman Lord Moynihan, who said: "The British Olympic Association is in the enviable position of being able to attract accomplished leaders such as Richard Leman and Seb Coe to serve on its board.

"It is with leadership of this calibre that the BOA is well placed to build upon its recent successes and continue making an important difference for British athletes as they pursue their Olympic dreams."

Lord Coe therefore looks set to be confirmed as the new chairman when 43-member National Olympic Committee meets on 7th November.
